Mabaso Clan — History & Meaning

Ndebele clan · isiNdebele

History & origin

Mabaso is a Nguni clan associated with KwaZulu-Natal. It is traditionally grouped within the Mntungwa Nguni cluster, the same broad grouping that includes the Khumalo, Blose and Zikode clans, who historically occupied territory in the region between the Ndwandwe and Mthethwa polities (broadly the area around the White Mfolozi). During the upheavals of the early 19th century (the Mfecane and the rise of the Zulu kingdom under Shaka), Mntungwa-affiliated clans like Mabaso were drawn into the consolidating Zulu state through warfare, alliance and absorption. The clan is today found widely across KwaZulu-Natal and the broader Zulu-speaking population.

Notable figures & facts

The Mntungwa grouping is best known historically through the Khumalo, from whom Mzilikazi (founder of the Matabele/Northern Ndebele kingdom) descended; Mabaso shares this Mntungwa affiliation. Reliable, individually documented Mabaso historical figures are limited, so specific named leaders are not asserted here.
