Mabhena Clan — History & Meaning

Ndebele clan · isiNdebele

History & origin

Mabhena is the royal clan name (isibongo) of the Manala branch of the Southern Ndebele. The Manala descend from Manala (Mbuduma), held in Ndebele oral tradition to be the senior son of King Musi from the great house, and therefore the line regarded as the senior Ndebele royal house. After the post-Musi succession split, Manala remained at the ancestral capital KwaMnyamana (in the Wonderboom area north of Pretoria) and his people occupied districts to the east and north of Pretoria (such as KoNonduna and Embilaneni). The Somlokothwa Mabhena lineage held political authority among the Manala. In the modern era the seniority of the Manala/Mabhena line was contested before the Nhlapo Commission on traditional leadership; the Manala king bears the title that situates Mabhena as a royal house of the Ndebele. Note that this Manala-Ndebele Mabhena should be distinguished from the separate Mabhena clans found among the Zulu and the Zimbabwean Ndebele.
