Mabhoko Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin

Mabhoko (also Mabhogo, anglicized 'Mapoch') is the name of the royal house and a celebrated 19th-century king of the Ndzundza Ndebele, one of the two main Southern (Transvaal) Ndebele groupings descended from King Musi (the other being the Manala). The Ndzundza ruling lineage is the Mahlangu. Under King Mabhoko in the 1840s the Ndzundza recovered from earlier defeats: he reorganized settlement around impregnable stone fortresses and made his capital at KoNomtjharhelo, popularly remembered as Mapoch's Caves, drawing on Swazi land surveyors, hunters and military experts to lay it out. The name endures in the present Ndzundza royal title: the reigning Ingwenyama since 2005 is King Mabhoko III (Makhosoke), of the Mahlangu royal house, a grandson on his mother's side of King Sobhuza II of Eswatini. Because the household surname of this line is Mahlangu, 'Mabhoko' functions principally as a royal house/title name rather than a widespread ordinary surname.
