History & origin
Mabunda (also Mavundza/Mavunda) is a clan within the Tsonga people of north-eastern South Africa (Limpopo) and southern Mozambique. Tsonga oral tradition records the Mabunda among groups that moved into the Lowveld during the 19th century, including during the dispersals caused by Soshangane's Gaza state. In the Tzaneen-Duiwelskloof area, Mabunda communities settled on land associated with the Lobedu queen Modjadji, with whom they had a relationship of patronage and mutual support. The Mabunda are today a recognised Tsonga chieftaincy in the Limpopo Lowveld.
Notable figures & facts
The clan is historically associated with the Lobedu (Modjadji) sphere of influence in the Tzaneen region; specific individually documented Mabunda chiefs are inconsistently recorded across sources, so named leaders are not asserted here.
