History & origin
Madiba is an isiduko (clan name) of the abaThembu, a Nguni nation of the Eastern Cape (historic Transkei), and falls within the broader Dlomo line of Thembu praise-lineage. It is most famous as the clan name of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The name derives from a Thembu chief named Madiba; Mandela himself was of the Madiba clan through the Ixhiba (a junior 'left-hand' house) branch of the Thembu royal house descended from King Ngubengcuka (died 1830).
Notable figures & facts
Documented Thembu rulers and chiefs associated with the Madiba/Thembu royal line include Ngubengcuka, Mthikrakra, Ngangelizwe, Dalindyebo, Sabata Dalindyebo and Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, and most famously Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), South Africa's first democratically elected president, who was widely and affectionately addressed by this clan name.
