Madonsela Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Madonsela (the Swati orthography is Madvonsela) is counted among the bemdzabuko, the original 'true Swazi' clans that accompanied the Dlamini kings during the early formation of the Swazi nation and are regarded as part of its founding core. As such the clan is considered indigenous to the early Swazi polity rather than a later arrival. The surname is widespread among Nguni-speaking peoples of southern Africa, particularly within Swazi and neighbouring Zulu communities, and is common today in both Eswatini and South Africa (notably Mpumalanga and Gauteng).
Notable figures & facts
Thuli Madonsela, the former Public Protector of South Africa (2009–2016), is a prominent bearer of the surname, though she is a South African public figure rather than a documented figure of early clan history.
