Madzivhandila (Tshakhuma) Clan — History & Meaning

Venda clan · Tshivenda

Totem Documented totem not reliably established in the consulted sources; the Tshakhuma/Madzivhandila line is linked to the older Vhangona stratum, but I cannot confirm a specific totem from documented tradition without risking fabrication.

History & origin

Madzivhandila is the ruling clan-name of Tshakhuma. The recorded line begins with Khosi Radzaga, whose sons were Ratshiangwana and Bodomedzha (Mabodo); the succession ran through Mbodi, then Tshimbiluni (whose other sons included Ganyane, Tshibevha, Mushavhani and Makhuvha), to the well-known Mavhungu Madzivhandila. The clan was politically significant in the 19th century: Khosi Madzivhandila of Tshakhuma was King Makhado Ramabulana's father-in-law (Sinthumule's mother Dombo was Madzivhandila's daughter), which is why Davhana's forces targeted Madzivhandila first, to cut him off from aiding Makhado. In the modern era, Chief Mavhungu Madzivhandila led the Tshakhuma area (13 villages) for about fifty years, inaugurated as chief in 1960 at Mangwele. Tshakhuma sits in the foothills near Mangwele, overlooked by the Lwamondo range.
