Magoro Clan — History & Meaning

Pedi clan · Sepedi

Totem Kolobe (pig / bush pig)

History & origin

Magoro is a Bapedi/Northern Sotho clan associated with the Sekhukhune and broader Limpopo (former Northern Transvaal) region. The name is also borne by communities in the Vhembe area of Limpopo, reflecting the long history of Sotho-Tsonga-Venda interaction in that province. The Magoro are documented among the kolobe (pig) totem clans of the Northern Sotho. As with most Bapedi houses, lineage and chieftaincy were organised around totemic respect, with the totem animal not eaten or harmed by clan members.
