Mahlangu Clan — History & Meaning
Zulu clan · isiZulu
History & origin
Mahlangu is the principal ruling clan of the Ndzundza Ndebele of South Africa. The Southern Ndebele trace their origin to a Nguni group that migrated into the Transvaal (present-day Gauteng/Mpumalanga) under Chief Musi, settling near present-day Pretoria (KwaMnyamana). After Musi's death his sons split the people into two main groups in a succession dispute: the Ndzundza and the Manala. The Mahlangu became the ruling lineage of the Ndzundza Ndebele. The Ndzundza under their leaders resisted encroachment by Boer settlers, culminating in the 1882-1883 Mapoch War (named after Chief Nyabela 'Mapoch' Mahlangu), after which the ZAR besieged and defeated the famine-stricken Ndzundza, expropriated their land, and imprisoned their leadership. Today Mahlangu is one of the most common Southern Ndebele surnames.
