Mahlatji Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin
Mahlatji (Malatji) is NOT an Ndebele clan; it is a Sotho-Tswana (Bapedi / Northern Sotho) clan of Limpopo Province, South Africa. The Malatji clan is part of the Noko (porcupine) totem group and is described as the largest clan within that totem, with origins in the Phalaborwa area of Limpopo. Oral tradition holds that the clan separated from an earlier tshwene (baboon) totem and adopted the porcupine. Like other Sotho-Tswana peoples, the Bapedi use totems (diboko) to mark sister clans and kinship rather than the Nguni izithakazelo system.
