Maluleka Clan — History & Meaning
Ndebele clan · isiNdebele
History & origin
Maluleka is a spelling variant of Maluleke. This is a Tsonga (Vatsonga) clan, NOT an Ndebele clan, and it is included here with that correction. The Maluleke (also called Van'wanati / VaN'wanati) trace their dynasty to Malenga wa Gunyule, with the polity expanding under his successors, in the area straddling the confluence of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and the northern reaches of what is today the Kruger National Park, around the 17th century. They are one of the principal Tsonga-speaking groups of the Limpopo lowveld. Because the surname belongs to Tsonga (not Ndebele) heritage, any Ndebele attribution would be inaccurate.
Notable figures & facts
The Makuleke community of the far-northern Kruger National Park (Pafuri area) descends from this lineage; they were forcibly removed from their land in 1969 and successfully won one of South Africa's landmark post-apartheid land-restitution claims in 1998.
