Mamabolo Clan — History & Meaning

Pedi clan · Sepedi

Totem Wild pig / bushpig (English) / Kolobe (Goloe) in Sotho

History & origin

The Mamabolo are a Northern Sotho group settled north-east of Polokwane in Limpopo (the Mamabolo area, near the Magoebaskloof/Houtbosdorp district). They are documented as descendants of Mokwebo lineages associated with the wild-pig (kolobe) totem, an animal totem common in this part of the northern Sotho/Balobedu cultural zone. They are listed among the highveld Northern Sotho (Pedi-related) chiefdoms. A documented monograph, 'The Origin and Development of the Mamabolo Tribe: A Historical Perspective' (M.E.R. Mamabolo), records their tribal history.
