Mandela Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin
Mandela is a surname within the abaThembu of the Eastern Cape rather than an isiduko in itself; the associated clan name is Madiba. The surname traces to a man named Mandela, a son of the 18th/early-19th-century Thembu king Ngubengcuka, who was born of the Ixhiba (junior 'left-hand') house. Because this was a ritually junior, morganatic branch, Mandela's descendants did not stand in the direct line of succession but served as counsellors to the Thembu paramountcy. Mandela's son Mandela became the line's eponymous ancestor and the surname descended through his great-grandson Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa to Nelson Mandela.
Notable figures & facts
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918-2013), anti-apartheid leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1993) and first president of democratic South Africa; his father Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa was a councillor and headman at Mvezo. Other family members include Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and chief Mandla Mandela of Mvezo.
