Maphetla Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Tradition does not consistently record a distinct animal totem; Maphetla are remembered chiefly as an early pioneer group rather than by a prominent totem, so totem is uncertain and left unstated rather than invented

History & origin

The Maphetla are remembered in Basotho oral tradition (recorded by Ellenberger and others) as among the very first Sesotho-speaking Bantu groups to cross the Drakensberg / Maloti and settle in the Caledon valley region, alongside the Mapolane and Baphuthing, displacing or absorbing earlier San (Bushman) inhabitants. They are thus counted among the earliest 'foundation' clans of what became the Basotho, predating the larger Kwena and Fokeng influxes. They were later absorbed into the broader Basotho polity.
