Maphuthing a Mokhachane Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Wild cat / 'phuthi' (a small antelope, the duiker) — the Maphuthing are associated with the duiker (phuthi)
History & origin
The Maphuthing (Maphetla/Maphuthing cluster) are a Sotho clan of the Caledon region active during the Difaqane. Historically the Maphuthing under chief Tsotetsi were among the groups disrupted and scattered in the wars of the 1820s before many were absorbed into Moshoeshoe I's Basotho polity. The name 'Maphuthing' is generally linked to the duiker ('phuthi'). 'Mokhachane' is also the name of Moshoeshoe's father (Mokhachane of the Bakoena Mokoteli), so the label here likely marks a specific house; I am confident on the Maphuthing clan identity, the duiker association, and their Difaqane-era history under Tsotetsi, but I flag that the 'a Mokhachane' qualifier is house-level detail I will not over-interpret.
