Maphuthing Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Duiker (a small antelope) — phuthi in Sesotho

History & origin

A Sotho-Tswana clan of Bakgatla/Bahurutshe descent. Tradition (Ellenberger; MatheVK) traces them to Tabane, a Bakgatla chief whose sons founded five sibling nations — the Bapedi, Makgolokwe (Kholokoe), Batlokwa, Maphuthing and Basia — often counted among the earliest groups to be called Basotho. The Maphuthing settled in the Caledon/Free State region. Their best-known historical episode is the early 19th-century Lifaqane/Difaqane wars, when the Maphuthing under chief Tsoaisi were among the groups caught up in the upheavals around the Batlokwa of Manthatisi. The duiker is said to have been adopted as totem because of its abundance in their early homeland (some traditions instead emphasise reverence for stones as battlefield weapons).
