Marishane Clan — History & Meaning
Pedi clan · Sepedi
Totem Kwena (crocodile) — regionally associated, confirm for the specific lineage
History & origin
Marishane is a Bapedi clan located in the Sekhukhune district of Limpopo, in the vicinity of Jane Furse and the Nebo plateau. The Marishane traditional community holds a recognised traditional authority/chieftaincy in that area. Like many core Bapedi Maroteng-affiliated lineages of Sekhukhune, the broader region is strongly associated with the kwena (crocodile) totem of the Sotho. The community is part of the dense cluster of Pedi villages that fall under the historic Marota/Sekhukhune polity.
