Maseko Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
The Maseko are documented as among the earliest royal rulers in the territory of present-day Eswatini, predating the dominance of the Dlamini line; tradition records that the Dlamini took over rulership from the Maseko, with settlement along the Pongola River where it cuts through the Lubombo mountains around 1750. The Maseko were subsequently among the emakhandzambili ("those found ahead") clans incorporated by Ngwane III, having been present on the land before the Dlamini conquest. The surname has been linked to Sotho-related roots (compared with Maseho in Lesotho), reflecting the mixed origins of some Swazi clans. A separate Maseko Ngoni group later migrated northward during the Mfecane era.
