History & origin
Maseko is a Nguni clan of Swazi origin. In Swazi tradition the Maseko are counted among the 'emakhandzambili' (clans found already settled) who were incorporated during the nation-building of the early Dlamini kings, notably Ngwane III. A major branch, the Maseko Ngoni, broke away during the upheavals of the early 19th century: led by Ngwane Maseko, they migrated northward out of the Swazi region through Mozambique. Ngwane Maseko died around 1839, and the group ultimately crossed the Zambezi and settled in the Ntcheu area of present-day Malawi, where the Maseko Ngoni remain a recognised people. The clan is therefore found today in Eswatini, South Africa and (as the Maseko Ngoni) in Malawi.
Notable figures & facts
Ngwane Maseko, leader of the Maseko Ngoni migration northward during the Mfecane-era dispersals, is the clan's most historically prominent figure. The Maseko Ngoni paramountcy in Ntcheu, Malawi, descends from this line.
