Masia (Ha-Masia) Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
Totem Documented totem not reliably established; the Masia are Vhalaudzi of Govhamasenga deriving from the Vhasenzi/Singo group (elephant-Ndou associated), but a distinct Masia totem is not confirmed in the available sources.
History & origin
Ha-Masia is ruled by the Vhalaudzi of Govhamasenga, a lineage tracing to the Vhasenzi group led by the Singo. Govhamasenga and his half-brother Tshimudi originally settled along the Mutshedzi River in the Nzhelele valley (Vhulaudzi). During Thohoyandou's reign (Thohoyandou's mother was Govhamasenga's sister), Govhamasenga and Tshimudi were deployed to the Mapulaneng/Mashishing area to secure tribute; after Thohoyandou's disappearance (1770) they returned to Venda and settled at Tshinavheni. Govhamasenga's children founded several lines: Masia Mbando (the Masia line, ruling c.1793-1828), Ratshikwekwete (Netshimbupfe), and Mukovhi (Netshivhulana). The Masia ruling succession ran through Munwai, Tshinavhe, Ramauba and Ntshavheni (1953-1999). The clan has been the subject of widely reported modern chieftaincy disputes.
