Masilela Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin
The Masilela are a Nguni clan prominent among the Southern Ndebele (and also found among Swazi communities), historically settled in present-day Mpumalanga, South Africa. They are notably tied to the Ndzundza Ndebele royal history: after the death of King Mabhogo (Mabhoko) in 1865, the regency/leadership of the Ndzundza passed through the Masilela family, with figures named in the succession sequence including Soqaleni (to 1873) and Xobongo (to 1879), before Nyabela. This places the Masilela close to the centre of 19th-century Ndzundza Ndebele political history. Note: the precise nature of the Masilela role (regents versus chiefs) is described variously across sources.
Notable figures & facts
Members of the Masilela family held Ndzundza Ndebele leadership/regency in the period after King Mabhogo's death in 1865 (e.g. Soqaleni and Xobongo are named in the succession), preceding the well-known King Nyabela. I have limited this to what the historical record supports.
