Masuku Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
The Masuku are a Nguni clan found among Swazi, Zulu and Ndebele communities, concentrated in Eswatini, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, with related lineages extending into Zimbabwe. Some traditions associate the clan with the Ndwandwe cluster, whose origins are placed around the Gudu hills overlooking the Phongolo (Pongola) river. In Zimbabwean Ndebele tradition the name Masuku carries several related associations (commonly the black eagle, the masuku/reed tree, and 'one who walks at night'). The clan praises run across many related families rather than a single household. Note: the link to the Ndwandwe is from oral tradition and is not uniformly attested.
