Matsebula Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Matsebula is one of the bemdzabuko ('true Swazi') founding clans of Nguni origin that accompanied the Dlamini royal line. The clan holds a distinctive ritual position in the Swazi monarchy: together with the Motsa clan, the Matsebula traditionally supply one of the ritual wives of the king (the sesulamsiti / 'wiping-away-of-evil' wife). These specially selected wives perform ceremonial functions, and by custom their sons are barred from the kingship, preserving the rule that the king's heir is born of a later 'great wife'.
Notable figures & facts
Documented for its hereditary ritual role of providing a ceremonial first/second wife of the Ngwenyama, a function recorded in ethnographic studies of Swazi kingship (e.g. the work of Hilda Kuper).
