Mchunu Clan — History & Meaning
Zulu clan · isiZulu
History & origin
The Mchunu (amaChunu / Cunu) are a Zulu clan historically associated with the Msinga and Greytown districts of KwaZulu-Natal, with remnants also in the Nkandla area. In the early 19th century the clan was led by Macingwane and later by Chief Phakade, who escaped from Zululand during the reign of Dingane and established the clan in the Msinga district. Phakade died in 1880 and was succeeded by Gabangaye, then Silwane. The clan's connection to the Zondi is documented: Chief Phakade's daughter was the mother of Bhambatha kaMancinza Zondi. In the 20th century the clan was led by Inkosi Simakade Mchunu (1924-2015), traditional leader from 1944 until his death, who was prominent in efforts to bring stability to the conflict-affected Msinga region.
