History & origin
Mditshwa is best documented as a chiefly name within the amaMpondomise, the Xhosa-speaking people of the Tsolo and Qumbu districts of the Eastern Cape. Chief Mditshwa of Tsolo was a senior leader of the amaMpondomise in the 19th century, descended from the Mpondomise royal line (recorded as a descendant of Phahlo). The amaMpondomise form part of the abaMbo grouping, tracing descent through Njanya. Mditshwa led one of the two principal Mpondomise chiefdoms (the Tsolo branch), the other being associated with Mhlontlo at Qumbu.
