Mdluli is one of the bemdzabuko ('true Swazi') founding clans of Nguni descent incorporated into the Swazi nation under the early Dlamini kings. The same clan name is also found among the Zulu and other Nguni peoples, reflecting a shared northern-Nguni heritage. Within Eswatini the Mdluli became an established commoner lineage and are particularly associated with the central region around Manzini.
