History & origin
The Mfengu (amaMfengu, historically called 'Fingoes' by the British) were not a single ancient clan but a cluster of Nguni refugee groups, principally the Hlubi, Zizi and Bhele, displaced by the Mfecane in the 1820s. The name derives from 'ukumfenguza' (to wander seeking service/food). They sought refuge among and beyond the Gcaleka Xhosa, and in 1835, during the frontier wars, large numbers were resettled by the British colonial authorities in the Cape Colony (notably around Peddie). They became known for early adoption of mission education and Christianity, which shaped their distinct historical role on the frontier.
