Mhlanga Clan — History & Meaning
Ndebele clan · isiNdebele
History & origin
Mhlanga (from Nguni umhlanga, 'reed') is a Nguni clan name carried among the Southern Ndebele, Zulu, Swazi and others. In Southern Ndebele oral tradition the recorded early history of the people begins with their first leaders, and uMhlanga (son of Ndebele) is named as the leader under whom the group separated from related Nguni and migrated inland (to the area around present-day Gauteng); Mhlanga is given as the father of Musi, from whom the major Ndebele houses (including Ndzundza/Mahlangu and Manala) descend. The name is also widespread among the Swazi and in Zimbabwe. As this rests on oral tradition, early generations should be treated as traditional rather than dated fact.
