Mlambo Clan — History & Meaning
Ndebele clan · isiNdebele
History & origin
Mlambo (from a Bantu root meaning 'river') is a clan name associated chiefly with the Ndau and broader Shona/Ndebele communities of Zimbabwe and the South Africa-Mozambique-Zimbabwe borderlands. In Ndau tradition Musikavanthu/Mlambo is regarded as a common apical ancestor of the Ndau people, alongside other Ndau-Shangani clans such as Simango, Mhlanga, Mashaba and Moyana. The name is common in Zimbabwe and in South Africa (notably KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng). Genealogical detail beyond this rests on oral tradition.
Notable figures & facts
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former Deputy President of South Africa and later head of UN Women, carries the surname by marriage; I note this as a biographical detail rather than as clan lineage evidence.
