Mngomezulu Clan — History & Meaning

Swati clan · siSwati

History & origin

The Mngomezulu are a Nguni clan most strongly associated with the Ingwavuma area of northern KwaZulu-Natal and adjacent Eswatini, around the Lubombo (uBombo) mountains. Oral tradition holds that the clan is named after an ancestor, Inkosi Mngomezulu, who died during their migration; leadership then passed to his son Mdluli, who led the people to the Lubombo mountains and onward toward the coast at a place called KwaNibela, where he too died. The Mngomezulu historically paid allegiance to both Zulu and Swazi kings until 1895, when Inkosi Mbikiza approached the British authorities at Eshowe over conflict in the Ingwavuma region where their chieftaincy is still based. Some traditions also cite a northern (Sotho/'Msutu waseNyakatho') strand in their origins.
