Mogashoa Clan — History & Meaning

Pedi clan · Sepedi

Totem Tau (lion) - Mogashoa is one of the Batau ('people of the lion') communities.

History & origin

Mogashoa is documented as one of the Batau (lion-totem) communities of Sekhukhuneland in Limpopo, sharing the Batau migration history. The Batau trace an origin from the Swazi/Wakkerstroom-Lake Chrissie area; after defeat by Mzilikazi during the Mfecane they moved north and settled in what is now Sekhukhuneland. In the recorded Batau genealogy, Mogashoa is named as the sister's son of the Batau leader Matlebjane (whose sons are listed as Mokwena, Seloane, Masemola, Phaahla and Photo, with Mogashoa counted among this group born of different mothers). Tradition records a fatal succession conflict in which Mogashoa was implicated in the plot against Matlebjane; after this the Batau scattered and Mogashoa established his own separate leadership line. The surname is overwhelmingly South African and most concentrated in Limpopo.
