Mokone Clan — History & Meaning

Pedi clan · Sepedi

Totem Porcupine / Noko among Pedi-incorporated Bakone; note that the wider Bakone groups carried varied totems

History & origin

Mokone (plural Bakone) denotes 'people of the north', an old and widely dispersed Northern Sotho grouping of the present Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces whose traditions emphasise a northern or north-eastern origin. The Bakone are historically associated with the Bokoni stone-walled settlements of the Mpumalanga escarpment. Many Bakone groups were incorporated into the Bapedi kingdom while keeping their own clan names. Because the Bakone label covers some fifty distinct groups, recorded totems vary widely (porcupine among Pedi-aligned Bakone, but also others such as buffalo, crocodile, leopard, lion and baboon among different Koni groups).
