Motsa Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Motsa is one of the bemdzabuko ('true Swazi') founding clans. Like the Matsebula, the Motsa clan holds a recognised ritual role in the monarchy: the national council customarily selects one of the king's ritual wives from the Motsa clan, paired with the Matsebula in this function. These ceremonial wives carry out ritual duties, and their sons are excluded from succession to the throne.
Notable figures & facts
Documented, alongside Matsebula, for the hereditary role of supplying a ritual wife of the Swazi king, as recorded in ethnographies of Swazi kingship.
