Mphaphuli (Ha-Mphaphuli) Clan — History & Meaning

Venda clan · Tshivenda

Totem Elephant — Ndou (Tshivenda), as a branch of the Singo.

History & origin

The Mphaphuli house descends from Gole, the high priest (keeper of ritual) during King Thohoyandou's reign, who was nicknamed Muphaphuli/Mphaphuli from the praise 'Gole u phaphula maswina' ('Gole chops/cuts the enemies to pieces'). The Mphaphulis identify as Singo. Gole's son Tshilala Mphaphuli was assigned the south-eastern flank of the kingdom, with his base at Tshitomboni to defend against south-eastern invaders, later settling at Miluwani and then Mbilwi (relocating out of fear of Ramabulana attacks). Succession disputes among Tshilala's descendants followed (Madadzhe ruled but was killed at Tshakhuma). The Ha-Mphaphuli chiefdom today covers more than 60 villages including the area of Thohoyandou town and Makwarela, and contains the Nandoni (former Luvuvhu) Dam.
