Mpinga Clan — History & Meaning
Xhosa clan · isiXhosa
History & origin
AmaMpinga trace descent from Ntose, whose second wife bore Mpinga, founder of the clan. The documented great-house lineage runs Mpinga > Mawawa > Senzwa > Ngwangwashe and onward through later generations. The clan lost its chieftainship and land amid colonial-era disruption (associated with the magistrate Hope), after which the amaMpinga dispersed into Xhosaland, Pondoland (Bizana, Ntabankulu) and Thembuland.
Notable figures & facts
Enoch Sontonga, composer of 'Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika' (part of the South African national anthem), is documented as being of the amaMpinga clan.
