History & origin
The amaMpondo are a Xhosa-speaking nation of Pondoland in the northeastern Eastern Cape. Their lineage is traced through Sibiside to Njanya, with Mpondo and Mpondomise traditionally regarded as twin brothers (and Xesibe as a related line), placing them in the Mbo grouping related to the Swazi, Hlubi, Dlamini and others. Documented descendants of Mpondo include Nyawuza (the ruling clan), Santsabe, Msiza, Ncindise, Cabe, Khonjwayo and many others. The ruling Nyawuza house led the amaMpondo, who long maintained autonomy before formal colonial annexation of Pondoland in 1894.
