History & origin
The amaMpondomise are a Xhosa-speaking people of the Eastern Cape, centred on Tsolo (great house) and Qumbu (right-hand house). They trace descent through Sibiside and Njanya, with Mpondomise regarded as twin to Mpondo. King Ngcwina is a key ancestor whose sons founded several Mpondomise clans (including the Cirha and Dosini lines), while the senior Jola/Majola clan forms the great house, noted in tradition for intermarriage with the San. The Mpondomise are traditionally associated with the Majola (mole snake) totem.
Notable figures & facts
King Mhlontlo kaMatiwane (reigned c. 1870-1912), who led the amaMpondomise in the 1880-81 revolt and was accused (later acquitted) of killing the Qumbu magistrate Hamilton Hope.
