Mthembu Clan — History & Meaning

Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

Mthembu (Thembu) is both a surname and the name of the abaThembu nation, a southern Nguni people of the Eastern Cape, historically centred in the Transkei region around Mthatha. Oral tradition holds the Thembu descend from an ancestor named Thembu (a descendant in the Dlomo/Nguni line) whose people migrated southward and settled in the area between the Mbashe and Mthatha rivers; the Thembu were established as a distinct chiefdom by the time of Nxeko, traditionally said to have been granted independence by a ruler called Togu. The Thembu paramountcy crystallised under later kings descended from Ngubengcuka.

Notable figures & facts

Thembu kings and chiefs include Ngubengcuka, Mthikrakra, Ngangelizwe, King Dalindyebo, Sabata Dalindyebo and Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo. The Thembu royal house produced the Madiba clan of Nelson Mandela.
