Mthethwa Clan — History & Meaning

Ndebele clan · isiNdebele

History & origin

Mthethwa is a senior northern-Nguni clan of KwaZulu-Natal, not a Southern Ndebele clan. The Mthethwa are remembered as an early Nguni group that, after settling around the Lubombo region, moved into the Nkandla/coastal area of present-day KwaZulu-Natal. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the Mthethwa rose to dominance under Dingiswayo (Godongwana), who built the Mthethwa Paramountcy, a confederation of some thirty Nguni chiefdoms, and introduced military reforms and age-regiments. Dingiswayo mentored the young Shaka kaSenzangakhona of the then-subordinate Zulu. After Dingiswayo was killed by the Ndwandwe (Zwide) around 1817, the paramountcy was absorbed into Shaka's emerging Zulu kingdom. The Mthethwa thus form one of the foundational lineages of the Zulu nation.
