Mthombeni Clan — History & Meaning
Ndebele clan · isiNdebele
History & origin
Mthombeni is a clan name carried in both Northern Ndebele and Tsonga contexts. In Northern Ndebele (Transvaal/Gauteng-Limpopo) tradition, Mthombeni is associated with one of the sons of King Musi; after a succession dispute, this branch migrated northward (toward the Zebediela area) and is connected with the line that became known as Kekana (Gegana). The surname also has independent Tsonga roots. Today it is most common in Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo. (A frequently repeated etymology deriving 'Mthombeni' from a Tswana word 'thomba' appears only in auto-generated surname sites and is not reliable; I exclude it.)
