History & origin
Mtimkulu (more commonly Mthimkhulu, from Nguni mthi 'tree' and mkhulu 'great' - 'great tree') is a senior clan name of the amaHlubi, one of the oldest Nguni (specifically Mbo/Ntungwa-related) peoples, also closely linked with the Radebe clan name. Mthimkhulu was a title/name borne by amaHlubi kings; the most prominent, Mthimkhulu, led the Hlubi before the Mfecane disruptions of the early 19th century, when the Hlubi were scattered by Ngwane and Zulu pressure and dispersed across the Drakensberg region, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, intermarrying with Zulu, Xhosa, Swazi and Sotho communities. The amaHlubi later pursued recognition as a distinct nation/kingship in South Africa.
Notable figures & facts
