History & origin
Mtshali is a Zulu/Nguni clan whose name derives from -tshala ('to plant'), said to commemorate an ancestor renowned as a skilled cultivator ('the planter'). The documented genealogy runs through Mabhedla (father of Mtshali) down to the chief Khondlo, a feared leader who was killed during Shaka's reign; Khondlo's line continued through Hlabangane to Shishi kaMduna. Under Shishi, a section of the Mtshali fled Shaka's wars together with Mzilikazi kaMashobane during the Mfecane and settled in the Bulawayo area of present-day Zimbabwe, where Mtshali remains a common Northern Ndebele (Matabele) surname. Those who stayed are associated with the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, around Ntabankulu near Vryheid. The clan thus spans Zulu and Northern Ndebele communities.
