Mufamadi Clan — History & Meaning

Venda clan · Tshivenda

History & origin

The Vhafamadi (surname Mufamadi) are an offshoot of the Vhakwevho and, with the Vhadau, Vhakwevho, Vhania, Vhalea and Vhaluvhu, are grouped among the Vhangona, the aboriginal inhabitants of Venda. As a sub-group of the Vhatavhatsindi, the Vhafamadi separated from the Vhakwevho (who settled at Luonde and Luvhola) and settled at Ha-Mashau. Oral history supported by archaeological evidence places Vhafamadi settlement at Ha-Mashau from around 1200 CE, marking them as one of the early-settled Venda clans. A distinct totem for the Mufamadi clan was not reliably documented separately from their Vhakwevho (Nguluvhe/warthog) heritage, so none is asserted.
