Mukwevho Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
Totem Warthog (English) / Nguluvhe (Tshivenda). The Vhakwevho of Luonde are known as Nguluvhe Khulu ('big warthogs') and those of Luvhola as Zwigwamtada ('small warthogs').
History & origin
Vhakwevho are a sub-group of the Vhatavhatsindi and are counted among the original (Vhangona) inhabitants of Venda, predating the Singo/Vhasenzi conquest. Their ancestral lands are Luonde and Luvhola (in present-day Makhado area, Limpopo). Mount Luvhola takes its name from the Tshivenda word for a bee sting (luvholela), and the Mukwevho maintained spiritual shrines and ancestral graves on the mountain, continuing to visit them even after the community was subjected to forced removals in 1966/67. The Vhakwevho settled at Luonde/Luvhola while a related Vhatavhatsindi sub-group, the Vhafamadi, settled at Ha-Mashau.
