Mulaudzi Clan — History & Meaning
Venda clan · Tshivenda
History & origin
Mulaudzi (clan group Vhalaudzi/Vhalaudzi) is one of the recognised original Tshivenda clan surnames. The Vhalaudzi are documented as one of the three components of the Vhasenzi, together with the Masingo (Singo) and the Vhandalamo. The Vhasenzi were Karanga-Rozvi people who broke away from the Changamire Rozvi state and moved south, settling in Venda from about the mid-1500s; under Dimbanyika (mid-1600s) the Vhasenzi-led groups were unified into the Venda nation. The surname today is concentrated overwhelmingly in Limpopo, with smaller populations in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. A specific animal/object totem for the Mulaudzi clan was not reliably documented in the sources consulted, so none is asserted here.
