Mulovhedzi Clan — History & Meaning

Venda clan · Tshivenda

Totem Not reliably documented as a specific animal/object totem

History & origin

Mulovhedzi (singular; plural Vhalovhedzi, also written Vhalembethu in some sources) is documented as the name of one of the constituent clan groupings of the Vhavenda. In standard accounts of Venda ethnogenesis, Mulovhedzi/Vhalovhedzi appears among the later, non-Vhangona groupings — broadly within the Karanga-Rozvi / Vhasenzi stream of clans that migrated south from north of the Limpopo (Vhembe) River and merged into the Venda nation that coalesced under the Singo from the 17th century onward, in present-day Vhembe District, Limpopo. 'Mulovhedzi' is also cited in linguistic studies as one of the original Tshivenda clan-derived surnames. I can document its standing as a recognised Venda clan/surname and its general placement among the migrant (non-aboriginal) clans, but I do not have a reliably documented specific founding narrative or a confirmed animal/object totem for it, so I have not asserted one.
