Ndaba Clan — History & Meaning
Zulu clan · isiZulu
History & origin
Ndaba is best documented as the name of Ndaba kaMageba, an early chief of the Zulu people (reigning roughly in the mid-18th century, c. 1745-1763). In the Zulu royal genealogy he was son of Mageba, father of Jama, grandfather of Senzangakhona, and thus great-great-grandfather of King Shaka. His name survives in the royal lineage and in the well-known phrase honouring 'the children of Ndaba.' As a present-day surname, Ndaba is borne by many families, not all descending from this royal figure; the firmly documented history is that of Ndaba kaMageba within the Zulu royal succession. Care should be taken not to conflate the historical Zulu chief with every modern bearer of the surname.
