Ndlangamandla Clan — History & Meaning

Ndebele clan · isiNdebele

History & origin

The Ndlangamandla (Dlangamandla) are an Nguni clan of the Ntungwa stock, documented as a branch related to the Khumalo and standing close to the Nkosi/Dlamini lineage. Genealogy traces the founder Siwela, son of Gasa, back through Gasa kaZikode to the Khumalo line (Khumalo kaMntungwa). They are linked to the Nzuza, from whom the Mahlangu Ndebele clan is said to have branched, and to the Nkosi Dlamini from whom the Swazi and Zizi emerged — placing the Ndlangamandla firmly within the Swazi/Ndebele cultural sphere. Oral tradition locates an origin around Ngoje, near present-day Louwsberg in northern KwaZulu-Natal, with later establishment within the Swazi nation.
