Ndlela Clan — History & Meaning

Zulu clan · isiZulu

History & origin

Ndlela is most reliably documented through Ndlela kaSompisi (died 1840), one of the foremost generals and chief councillors (induna) of the Zulu kingdom. His father, Sompisi kaGugqa, was an advisor in the household of Senzangakhona. Ndlela rose as a warrior under Shaka and became Dingane's principal military commander and inDuna. He notably refused Dingane's orders to kill Mpande, thereby helping preserve the Zulu royal line. After a significant part of his army defected to Mpande at the Battle of Maqongqo (1840), Dingane condemned him as a traitor and had him executed. As a present-day surname, Ndlela is borne by many families; the firmly documented figure is Ndlela kaSompisi himself rather than a broadly attested separate clan genealogy.
