Ndwandwe Clan — History & Meaning

Swati clan · siSwati

History & origin

The Ndwandwe are a Nguni people who in the late 18th and early 19th centuries formed one of the dominant kingdoms of the region that is now northern KwaZulu-Natal and southern Eswatini, centred near the Pongola River and Magudu Mountain. Under Zwide kaLanga (ruled c. 1805-1820) they defeated the Mthethwa under Dingiswayo around 1817-1818 but were broken by Shaka's Zulu by 1819. After this defeat Zwide moved north into Ngwane (Swazi) country, and Ndwandwe segments dispersed widely. The Ndwandwe connect to the Swazi royal line through Zwide's daughter Thandile, who married the Swazi king Sobhuza I.

Notable figures & facts

Zwide kaLanga, king of the Ndwandwe. His daughter Thandile (LaZwide) married Sobhuza I and became an influential figure in the Swazi kingdom. Ndwandwe-derived leaders Soshangane (Gaza Empire, Mozambique) and Zwangendaba (Ngoni, Malawi/Tanzania) founded states during the dispersal.
